The Swabian Imperial County was a permanent institution, a place of pre-parliamentary decisions by equal members from the nobility, clergy, and imperial cities. Membership was a decisive criterion for imperial estates and thus for a seat in the 'Immerwährender Reichstag'. For Thurn und Taxis, it was an indispensable part of their own position. And so the dynasty sought admission to the Swabian Imperial County. What strategies and goals did Thurn und Taxis pursue? How did decision-making take place within the princely government? Was membership merely a “springboard” for a career in the empire, or did participation in the circle have its own relevance for the dynasty? This volume answers these and other questions and, for the first time, paints a comprehensive picture of the Thurn und Taxis family's membership in the Swabian Imperial County.
